our diamonds

our story

Rare and mysterious, symbolising purity and constancy.

Our diamonds are not only selected according to the best possible combination of the ‘4Cs’ (carat, colour, cut and clartity) but also for their fire, charm and unique character.

We can help you to choose the perfect stone, source exceptional diamonds, and explain their qualities. You’ll know the right diamond when you see it.

All Nicholas James diamonds are conflict-free, having been sourced through the Kimberley Process.

size & carat diagram

weight

A diamond’s size is measured in carat weight. The origin of this word is derived from the carob seed once used to weigh diamonds due to its naturally occurring uniform weight. Today, carat weight is commonly expressed in points, each carat equals 100 points. One carat weighs 0.2 grams.

We make diamond jewellery in a wide range of carats
depending on the design.

colour

A diamond is considered the more exceptional the whiter it is. Colour is assessed and classified using a scale developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) which ranges alphabetically from D to Z, the letter D representing the rarest and most desirable ‘exceptional white +’ diamonds to the letter Z which has a strong tint of yellow or brown.

Our diamonds are selected exclusively between ‘D’ and ‘H’, which means that they are all nothing less than white in colour.

Fancy coloured diamonds are also much sought after due to their extreme rarity. Their quality is judged by the intensity of their hue - the more intense the colour, the rarer they become.

cut & shapes of diamonds

cut

The cut of a diamond refers to its shape, proportion and the quality of its finish, in terms of its polish and symmetry. The shapes are designed to multiply the gem’s brilliance; namely to increase its light reflecting capacity. Cutting a diamond is delicate work that requires a craftsman’s imagination, patience and skill. A well cut diamond will display fire even when totally enclosed.

For each diamond we search for the perfect cut, which because of its proportions, symmetry and polish will give the gem the most brilliance, sparkle and life.

clarity

Virtually all diamonds contain identifying characteristics or inclusions; these are natural features in a diamond that can affect its quality, even if they are invisible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond depends on the number, size and position of its inclusions. The GIA clarity scale is used to classify stones from FL (flawless) to I3 (inclusions visible to the naked eye). To be rated FL, a diamond must contain no imperfection visible under a 10-power magnifying glass.

At Nicholas James, we only select diamonds rated between FL and VS, to ensure great clarity and the absence of any imperfections visible to the naked eye.
